Water in the early morning so that the foliage will be dry before dark. Moisten the soil to a depth of 6 inches. The critical period for moisture is during pod set and development. Try to water the soil, not the vines. Soak the soil when watering, to a depth of at least one inch each week during the growing season. Sandy soils may need watering more often.     UMN Extension (Minnesota): mulching three to four inches deep with grass clippings, weed-free straw, or other organic material will help keep soil moisture and prevent weeds.
